Pizza isn’t just pizza. There’s Detroit-style pizza and St. Louis-style pizza. Tavern-style pizza and New York-style pizza. Neapolitan pizza and Sicilian pizza. What *all* of these pizza varieties have in common, however, is that none of them are Ohio-style pizzas. But guess what? Columbus-style pizza is a thing, and there’s an Ohio food trail that celebrates this iconic Buckeye State dish!
There's pizza. And there are pizzerias in Columbus, Ohio. And then there's Columbus-style pizza in Ohio.
Columbus-style pizza is an iconic Ohio dish that's in a league of its own. It's so special, in fact, that there is an entire food trail devoted to this Buckeye State specialty.
Panzera's Pizza, 1354 Grandview Ave, Columbus, OH 43212, USA
The food trail blazes through 18 delicious dining spots, from historic eateries to the new kids on the block. All have one thing in common: they each offer a delicious take on the food phenomenon that is Columbus-style pizza.
Columbus-style pizza has been traced back to 1934 and is defined by three characteristics: a signature thin crust, edge-to-edge toppings, and smaller, square-shaped cuts. Topping order doesn't matter as much as other styles of pizza, but many Ohio pizzerias like to put the cheese on first, which leads to deliciously curled pepperonis and crispy sausage bits that are ridiculously good.

Speaking of squares, Columbus-style pizza is cut into cute little squares. With an absence of an outer "crust," this move makes sense. The square cuts are similar to tavern or party-style pizza, and we're here for it!
Gatto's Pizza, 3420 Indianola Ave, Columbus, OH 43214, USA
Food trails are fun because they present an opportunity to dive deep into a region's culinary culture, visiting new places and trying new things. In terms of trails, the Columbus-Style Pizza Trail is easily the most delicious "hike" you'll ever embark upon!
(Oh, and did we mention there's a prize for completing this culinary quest? Talk about a pizza party!)
