It’s no secret that Ohio is full of hauntings and ghosts. But while our haunted reputation is strong, you might be surprised to know that Ohio’s War of 1812 battlefield is as haunted as it is historic. Fort Meigs in Perrysburg is a popular historic destination, but it’s also home to some restless spirits that still walk the grounds late at night.

General William Henry Harrison established Fort Meigs in 1813 to ward off British attacks in the Northwest Territory during the War of 1812. Today, it's one of the largest wooden forts in the country and a national historic site.

But when the sun begins to set, visitors and employees report that some strange things happen, such as eerie blue lights that suddenly appear and float around the fort.

Sometimes, the sounds of canons in the distance and footsteps can be heard—and apparitions dressed in 1812 soldiers' uniforms are rumored to walk the grounds.

The most famous ghost story involves a ghostly soldier who appears to be waving frantically, trying to stop a brigade of Kentucky troops that attempted to cross the river to spike British guns. Only 170 of the 846 Kentucky troops made it back.

Each year in October the educational center hosts a ghost walk that features some of the most popular ghost sightings and stories surrounding the fort. This year's walk will take place on October 21-22 and 28-29.
