I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
The Buckeye State is filled with a bevy of towns both big and small, each with their own unique identity, culture, and history. Those looking for a European-inspired slice of small town life in Ohio can visit places like Sugarcreek, Dublin, and German Village, of course, but these towns aren’t the only places that provide a “trip across the pond” to visitors. Just north of Cincinnati, Mariemont is a delightful little European-inspired village with a thoughtful (and walkable) layout, tons of Tudor-revival architecture, and glorious gardens and greenspaces.
When conjuring up images of a quintessential European village, what comes to mind?
Founded by Mary Emery and planned by John Nolen and 25 leading American architects in the 1920s, Mariemont is a planned community that's earned numerous accolades over the years for its walkability, historic architecture, scenic beauty, and exuberant town spirit.
Well-known places in this delightful locale include the Mariemont Theatre, an art-house theatre that shows independent movies and feature films; Graeter's, an Ohio icon; and the National Exemplar.
The National Exemplar is one of those iconic Ohio restaurants that belongs on everyone's bucket list. The National Exemplar Restaurant was named after learning that Mary Emery once referred to her developing community as the National Exemplar, meaning national model community. Whether you come for a classic British "fry up" or a fine-dining dinner, a meal at this Mariemont restaurant is always a memorable experience.
Enjoy a meal outdoors when the weather's nice, and then feel free to wander into any of the many deserving local businesses in town... if it's the holiday season, purchase a Christmas tree from the Mariemont BSA Troop 149 Tree Sales lot... and during the summer, plan to peruse the weekly farmer's market! There's always something fun going on in marvelous Mariemont, Ohio.
Have you had the pleasure of visiting this European-inspired village in Ohio? Beautiful all year-round, Mariemont is a charming little locale teeming with Old World vibes and charm.
