Though Cleveland has a long and rich history, the city has undeniably modernized. Locals can travel back in time by touring historic buildings, but it is hard to imagine how the region may have appeared when it was first founded. Fortunately, history hounds don’t have to travel far for an incredible glimpse back in time. One historic village located only 90 minutes away from home feels like it is frozen in time. The original settlers of this site hailed from Moravia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. The Moravians were pacifists, though their sympathies were with the freedom-seeking colonists.
In the midst of Colonial tensions and whispers of revolution, Moravian missionaries left settlements in Pennsylvania in search of a more peaceful home.
The new settlement in Ohio was given to the missionaries by Delaware Chief Netawates, and it became a peaceful village where cultures and ideas were openly exchanged and encouraged.
Though the site is open to visitors from Memorial Day to Labor Day, it opens early for an Easter Sunrise Service. The festivities really pick up with a Spring lantern tour in May.
Aside from free events like the Easter service, admission to this charming site is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors (55+), $4 for children (7-17), and free for younger children.
