Cleveland city dwellers who want to get out in the country and get their hands dirty definitely won’t want to miss the authentic farm experience at Stearns Homestead, which is just a twenty minute drive from the city. Stearns Homestead is a working farm that welcomes visitors each weekend during its seasonal hours. Everyone from children on school field trips to families looking for a fun and memorable day trip will enjoy learning about the homestead’s rich history, petting the wide variety of animals, and learning the ins and outs of working on a farm. And the best part is, admission to Stearns Homestead is always absolutely free.
Stearns Homestead is home to over 75 adorable animals, including horses, sheep, goats, potbelly pigs, cats, rabbits, chickens, and turkeys.
On the weekends during the spring, summer, and fall, visitors can purchase a bag of feed to give to their favorite farm animals. However, they do ask that, for the health of the animals, only food that is purchased at the homestead be given to them.
In addition to the farm’s official residents, other types of wildlife also like to call Stearns Homestead home.
Canadian geese and wild ducks frequently fly in and around the acre pond behind the barnyard, while turtles and frogs can be seen enjoying the water.
Visitors who are interested in history might want to take a tour around the farm’s two museums, the Gibbs House, which was built in the 1940s, and the Stearns House, which dates all the way back to the 1850s.
Both houses are furnished with authentic period-style antiques and artifacts.
During the warmer months, Stearns Homestead also hosts a local farmer’s market, where visitors can purchase farm fresh produce, eggs, and honey, as well as wonderful arts and crafts, from local vendors.
The homestead also features a charming country store, which sells gorgeous antiques, handmade crafts, collectibles, and souvenirs. And if all the walking around the farm and meeting the animals has worked up an appetite, snacks, beverages, and penny candy are also available.
