What is the secret ingredient that makes a burger taste so darn good? Conventional wisdom would say that it’s love, but there may be some validity to the claim that history adds a bit of flavor. Westlake is a lovely community near Cleveland, and it’s home to an intriguing little tavern that may even be older than Cleveland’s oldest bar, historic Harbor Inn. Harbor Inn is widely considered to be one of the oldest in the region, but like Westlake’s tavern, it is surrounded in mystique.
Unfortunately, construction records were not kept in many areas following the Civil War. Why? Well, development in construction processes and the ease of transportation provided by railways meant construction was booming in the era. While we do not have a specific date to prove its age, Dover Gardens Tavern just may be the oldest bar in Greater Cleveland.
Hiding in Westlake is a building that's purported to be the area's oldest tavern.
Dover Gardens Tavern in Westlake is an area landmark. It's been around for as long as folks can recall, and records seem to indicate that it was built around 1876. The tavern was originally known as the Harvest Home, a business which, if the estimated age is accurate, is perhaps the oldest tavern in the area.
Over the years, new siding and upgrades have been introduced to the building, but the milieu has very much remained the same.
According to area records, the bar only closed its doors for a brief period during Prohibition (during which it was general store), but it returned to its roots as soon as the amendment banning alcohol consumption was repealed in 1933.
