Time in nature is something of a panacea. The beauty of the wild Ohio landscape is powerful enough to move a person, whether they’re very young or just young at heart. One of the most enchanting landscapes near Cleveland hides in Medina County off a busy state route… but once you work your way up the driveway, you’ll see that you have essentially entered another world. Prepare to experience pure splendor at Oenslager Nature Center! Check it out:
Welcome to Oenslager Nature Center at Alderfer-Chatfield Wildlife Sanctuary!
Oenslager Nature Center, formerly known as Wolf Creek Environmental Center, is a community gem in the Wadsworth and Sharon Center area of Medina County. Its landscape makes up the breathtaking Alderfer-Chatfield Wildlife Sanctuary, which is open to the public.
This wondrous park is a wildlife sanctuary, so visitors are encouraged to leave behind nothing but footprints.
While the Nature Center is open Tuesday through Sunday during select hours, it's also open to the public during various special events throughout the year. The annual Nature Art Fest is a visitor favorite at this destination, and it's an event that belongs on your calendar.
And their library offers visitors another avenue to learn, too.
This book, though officially unpublished, tells the story of one very special tree on the landscape. Nowadays, the tree is, unfortunately, returning to the soil, but it stood for decades in an almost unbelievable state. Its center was hollowed out, and yet its branches sprouted bright green leaves year after year.
The watercolor tree you just saw is based on this one, named the Enchanted Tree. Unfortunately, it fell in 2020, but it was alive and thriving up until then.
While the Enchanted Tree may be gone, the enchanted landscape remains. There are oodles of discoveries for adults and children alike to make, from sociable turkeys that hang out near the nature center to footprints, scratches, and other signs of wildlife sprinkled throughout the nature preserve.
To go from a dairy farm to one of the most ecologically rich landscapes near Cleveland took time. Many of the features were constructed for the purpose of education, and others were introduced simply to provide a habitat to local wildlife.
And no matter what season you visit, there's always something magical to discover.
This mystical landscape truly captures the majesty of each season. In the spring and summer, wildflowers and lily pads delight visitors. Autumn adds a splash of color variety to the landscape, and winter makes the evergreens feel warm and welcoming.
