I must confess: I’m not from Cleveland originally. I emigrated to the city fairly recently, but even though I’m not a dyed-in-the-wool Clevelander, the city has already become one of my favorite places in the world. There are so many things about Cleveland that can only be found there, and everyone from lifelong residents to new arrivals can agree that these unique places and unforgettable experiences will stick with them for life.
1. Cleveland rocks.
It's not just a song, it's a motto. From the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the speakers that play music all over downtown, Cleveland is one of the most musical cities in America.
2. The food is ridiculous.
Every city has their share of unique regional food, but Cleveland's is some of the best around. The delicious combo of kielbasa, French fries, and coleslaw on a classic Polish Boy makes for a veritable marvel of a sandwich. Bring extra napkins, of course.
3. The Indians will win a third World Series one day.
While the Windians made a valiant effort this season, they were stopped just short of glory by the Chicago Cubs. But that loss won't stop thousands of people from flooding the stands at Progressive Field on Opening Day this year.
4. The Browns will win one day too.
The Browns weren't quite as close as the Indians were to a big win this year, but the Dawg Pound has been through enough ups and downs in Cleveland's history to weather the storm. There's always next year.
5. The Cavaliers shocked the world with a monumental comeback.
The Cavs brought the NBA title to Cleveland this past season with an astounding 7-game series. This postseason was a roller-coaster of emotions that the people of Believeland won't soon forget, but don't let that distract you from the fact that the Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead.
6. East 4th Street is a magical place.
Downtown Cleveland is brimming with activity at all hours of the day, but few neighborhoods are quite as memorable as the neon-splashed shops, restaurants, and bars of East 4th Street. The district is home to many an unforgettable experience of Cleveland's vibrant nightlife.
7. Living in Cleveland is affordable.
Compared to other similarly-sized cities in America, Cleveland offers prime real estate at reasonable prices. Once you get a little outside the city, into places like neighboring Lakewood, it's even more affordable. For an urban experience as varied and amazing as Cleveland offers, it's an absolute steal to live there.
8. There's plenty to do.
A day in Cleveland is rarely boring. From shopping sprees at the Cleveland Arcade, to visits to one of the city's many spellbinding museums, to simply walking through the hundreds of acres of public parks that make up the famous Emerald Necklace, Cleveland has something to offer for everyone.
9. Cleveland is transforming.
Cleveland is always evolving. Sure, some of the buildings have been around for over a century, but that doesn't stop the Forest City from continuing to innovate in the arts, technology, and infrastructure. There's no telling what great thing Cleveland will add next.
10. Cleveland is one big family.
Above everything else that Cleveland has to offer, its greatest strength is its people. Clevelanders share a bond that crosses every other possible barrier, and our pride in our city and each other is without question. Without the people of Cleveland to give it its unique sense of life and light, it would be just another city.
