The entirety of Northeast Ohio is overflowing with epic places to visit, and many are under two hours from Cleveland. Geneva-on-the-Lake is a gorgeous little village that's full of adventure. This pretty place is only home to about 2,000 residents, but there's no shortage of things to do. Tuscarawas County is gorgeous in every season. The rolling landscape offers a distinct contrast to the one with which Clevelanders are familiar, but the attractions in the village are stand-out, as well. Known affectionately as "The Little Switzerland of Ohio", there's much in this community that sets it apart from similar villages. Millersburg is 66 miles south of Cleveland, but it is seemingly worlds away. Time seems to move slower in this laid-back community. Located near Mohican State Park is another park that's certainly worth the drive. Malabar Farm is a historic home and farm in the Pleasant Valley that once hosted author Louis Bromfield. He entertained his socialite peers at many get-togethers here, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning author dreamed up some of his best stories here. The site also hides fascinating points of interest like The Ceely Rose House, a home where a triple homicide once occurred, and sites that were featured in the movie The Shawshank Redemption.
Depending on where in Greater Cleveland you reside, the Newark Earthworks may be a bit of a drive... it's totally worth it, though. Three incredible earthen mounds decorate the site, dating to between 100 CE and 500 CE. You may not realize that this site is the official prehistoric monument of the State of Ohio, but you'll certainly realize its significance as you are dwarfed by these earthen structures. They were constructed by the Hopewell culture well before Europeans arrived in our region, and they have remained despite the sands of time. As the largest surviving Hopewell earthwork site in the nation, this pretty place is well worth the journey.
