Just across the river and overlooking the Cincinnati skyline, Covington is known for its historic homes and stunning views, but did you know that a rather peculiar and extremely rare house can also be found in this vibrant neighborhood? Perched on the hillside with one of the most beautiful views in the area, you’ll find a Futuro House. This privately owned home definitely stands out in Covington, as it should – there are very few left of its kind anywhere else in the world.
We are very lucky to have one of these Futuro Houses right here in the Cincinnati area, as they are very rare and obviously unique.
These odd-looking houses were designed as ski cabins that could easily be constructed on any terrain. They were quick to build, efficient to heat, and, as you can see from the photo above, relatively easy to move around.

Although the appearance of the Futuro House strongly resembles something you'd send to outer space, that was not their intent. The house that currently overlooks Cincinnati from Covington was purchased in 1973 by Rob Detzel, who still owns the property today.
The round-shaped home is made of fiberglass-reinforced polyester plastic, polyester-polyurethane, and poly(methyl methacrylate). The structure measures 13 feet tall and 26 feet in diameter. This particular model has 8 windows and a round interior.
The unit can quickly be heated to a comfortable temperature and is filled with one-of-a-kind fixtures and decor. It's estimated that there are only about 60 of these houses left in the world, and one is right here in the Tristate.
The Futuro Home may be tiny, but the sweeping views from both inside and the deck are some of the best in the city. In fact, it almost seems like you could take off and fly above the city.
Many cities have fought against this futuristic structure, calling it an eyesore. It may not be a grand mansion or new construction, but this home definitely adds character to our area and hopefully won't disappear to outer space anytime soon.
The Futuro House is historic in its own way, although it may not be a timeless row house or a modern loft. It’ll definitely make you do a double take when you drive by!
