Camping is one of those experiences that everyone really should try at least once, even if you think it’s not for you. There are so many options available close to Cincinnati where you can “glamp” rather than rough it by having to bring along the gear that tent camping requires. Whether you’re an avid camper or it’s just something that you’ve always wondered about, we’ve found the best campground for you, and it’s only a short drive from home.
Just a quick, two-hour drive from Cincinnati will bring you to the beautiful HomeGrown Hideaways.
This unique property is a campground and working farm nestled in the picturesque mountains of Berea, Kentucky. If you’ve never explored Berea, which is located south of Lexington and Richmond off of I-75, you may be surprised by the difference in the landscape from our own city, even though it’s not that far away.
It's owned by a lovely couple who simply want to share this serenity and natural beauty with others, and they do so through their unique rentals, one of which is the Grand Tipi.
The Grand Tipi is 24 feet tall and can sleep up to 10 people. It's situated right in the middle of a playground on the property, making it ideal for families with children.
Though the tipi does provide shelter, it’s still a rustic camping experience. There is an opening at the top and it has a dirt floor, as well as a fire pit inside to keep you cozy on chilly nights. Bring your own air mattress or other bedding, or you can rent cots from the campground for a comfy night’s sleep.

There's also "The Nook" - a secluded, 13-foot tent nestled away in the forest.
Like the Grand Tipi, you'll need to bring bedding or rent a cot, but The Nook is slightly more protected from the elements. It has a fire pit and a lovely bench for relaxing.
If this sounds a bit too rustic for you, you'll still want to book a stay at this mountain hideaway. They offer other accommodation options, such as a secluded Yome.
This raised, dome-shaped tent sleeps six and has a wood floor and beds, so it's a great mix of camping and staying in an indoor space.
There's also a treehouse, raised 10 feet from the ground with a set up similar to the interior of the Yome. A second beautiful treehouse is in the works and nearing completion.
HomeGrown Hideaways has a kitchen available to use, well-maintained restrooms and showers (during warmer months), and other amenities that will make it feel like home.
In addition to the unique overnight accommodations, the 100-acre property itself is a highlight.
You can hike around, relax in a hammock, meet the farm animals, and chat with the owners and other locals if you like. The property is also an outstanding event venue, which can be rented out for weddings, celebrations, and other festivities. The photo above shows the general layout of the farm.
When you do visit, be prepared to unplug and reconnect with nature.
There is no wifi here and cell service is spotty at best, so your phone won't be much of a companion... and that's for the best. You won't want to miss out on the gorgeous surroundings, sunrises, and sunsets!
