Cincinnati’s history is incredibly fascinating and there is evidence of it hiding all over our city. Some pieces of our past are easy to spot, like landmarks and buildings, while others are not so obvious. One historic destination in Cincinnati is hiding in plain sight, right on the side of a busy westside road. The Delhi Spring House is over 200 years old, and if you didn’t know this unique spring house was there, you’d probably drive right on by.
There's a good chance that you've driven along Delhi Pike at some point during your time in Cincinnati; however, you probably did not realize that you were driving along a route that has been used for centuries and that a historic site still remains there.
Near the intersection of Mayhew Avenue sits a small stone building that is thought to have been built in the 1790s. Known as the Delhi Spring House, it was once a resting place for weary travelers and also a place to keep things cool.
The land was owned by Colonel Cornelius Sedam, who settled Delhi Township and called 640 acres of its land home. This spring brought water from the hillside and a house was built around it for protection and storage.
You can read a detailed history of the Delhi Spring House and the land when visiting, as there is signage marking the spot. The site was patiently restored in 2004 and Delhi Township received an award from the Ohio Historical Society for its preservation efforts in 2005.
Today, the Delhi Spring House remains impressively intact, with only a few modern additions. You can see the outside clearly when you visit, as well as peek inside through a barred door to admire the 200-year-old stones and spring for yourself.
