Everyone enjoys a great underdog story, especially when it has a happy ending. You can find stories like these all over Cincinnati throughout its interesting history, and some of them have to do with saving historic locations. The Esquire Theatre in Clifton is a beloved movie theater in Cincinnati that has been through so much, including almost being turned into a Wendy’s Restaurant. This popular movie-watching destination is now standing strong and is poised to continue through its second century of business.
Believe it or not, The Esquire Theatre dates back to 1911 when it first opened as a movie theater in Cincinnati.
At that time, they showed silent films and also featured live events on stage. Those shows and experiences were just the beginning of over a century of entertainment.
The Esquire sits in the heart of the Gaslight District on Ludlow Avenue in Clifton.
In fact, the residents of Clifton fought for their theatre and for the neighborhood in the 1980s when large businesses and fast food chains wanted to take over. A passionate group of locals won this battle, keeping The Esquire from being turned into a Wendy's.
When the years-long battle was won, the direction of the neighborhood was established. And even today, you can feel that character and distinction when spending time in the Gaslight District.
The Esquire now shows a combination of newly released movies and classics that you can't see anywhere else.
It has several movies running at a time and you can see a current list and times on the theater's website, linked below. The Esquire hosts unique events throughout the year, which you can also learn more about on the website.
While this movie theater in Cincinnati has been remodeled and renovated over the years, its character remains the same.
The historic theater is one of our city's greatest success stories and hopefully it continues to bring smiles and every other emotion through the showing of movies at The Esquire.
There may not be another movie theater in Cincinnati that is loved in the way that locals love The Esquire. It’s not only unique and historic, but it has set the tone for the character of the Gaslight District in Clifton and is proof that the resident underdogs can, indeed, come out on top.
