As more and more people are turning to computers, e-readers, and phones rather than actual print, it’s not often that you hear about a bookstore that’s been around for almost 80 years. Despite the fact that we obviously support the online reading community, we also are in love with books and the stories they tell, both inside their bindings and from the hands that have held them. Local bookstores are especially charming and there is one hidden gem in downtown Cincinnati that is every book lover’s dream. Ohio Book Store is located on Main Street and features five entire floors of books, as well as a thriving book-binding and repair business. It’s a historic Cincinnati spot that will enchant you from the moment you walk through the door.
Serving the community since 1940, Ohio Book Store on Main Street downtown is any literary lover's dream come true.
It's the type of place that you may be surprised is still around, but are so incredibly thankful that it is. When you walk in, prepare to be overwhelmed by the number of books, magazines, and other related items that fill the space. And it doesn't stop on the first floor! Ohio Book Store carries a variety of genres, from new titles to rare vintage finds, and everything in between.
The five levels are divided by content and you can literally spend hours, or even days, browsing the shelves of titles. The staff is extremely friendly and passionate about the book business and will help you track down anything you may be looking for. The store has more than 300,000 books and magazines, covering all subjects, so you're sure to find something to grab your attention.
There are unique pop-up books, vintage collections, and often times, extremely rare editions. You'll also find plenty of modern titles, both fiction and nonfiction, and magazines of all sorts.
The owner of Ohio Book Store, James Fallon, has worked there for more than 50 years and also specializes in book repair and rebinding.
The most popular book to be repaired is the Bible and they recently had the task of restoring this 1793 Bible from the abolitionist John Rankin. This division of the store keeps them very busy, as people send them books from all over to be repaired and restored, which is an extremely detailed and delicate process.
Ohio Book Store is a rare gem in Cincinnati that is the perfect blend of nostalgia and history.
The store celebrates literary art with its impressive collection and they work hard to preserve the books that tell incredible stories and have been well-loved over the years. If you have a great appreciation for the written word, then visit Ohio Book Store for a one-of-a-kind Cincinnati experience.
