Cincinnati is home to quite a few museums that each offer something for everyone. You could spend several days museum-hopping around the Queen City, and one of your stops should definitely be the Behringer-Crawford Museum in Covington. This grand, historic building sits atop the hill in Devou Park and includes three stories of exhibits, hands-on experiences, and artifacts. It wonderfully shows the history of transportation in the Cincinnati area and it’s definitely worthy of a day trip.
The beautiful Behringer-Crawford Museum first opened in 1950 and mainly housed collections from world travels. Since then, it's become a regional destination to learn about the history of our area, specifically transportation and how it's impacted the river town of Cincinnati.
BCM adopted the transportation theme around 1980, and you'll find many fascinating exhibits that feature the history of the rivers, roads, rails, and runways of our area. While this is the focus of the museum, you'll also find other topics, such as immigration, tourism and entertainment, municipal and regional planning, and the local arts heritage.
From the moment you walk in the door of the museum, you'll know you're in for a treat. A restored streetcar, built in 1892, sits in the lobby and welcomes you to the three floors of interactive history and hands-on fun.
You can reach the different levels of the museum by stairs or elevator, making it accommodating for all ages and abilities. The museum itself is great for everyone, as the children will love the interactive aspects and adults can surely appreciate the quality and history presented.
The museum takes you back in time, through many different eras. There are both original artifacts and recreations to allow you to experience the time period first hand.
The real-life transportation world is also made miniature with a charming display. You can get a unique perspective, as you can see below, and the attention to detail on this exhibit is unmatched.
Behringer-Crawford may best be known for its holiday train display, which is definitely a favorite tradition for many local families. The museum hosts many events throughout the year, so be sure to keep an eye on its website for details.
If you do take little ones to the museum, be sure to make a side trip down the hill to the Nature Playscape that's adjacent to Behringer-Crawford. This is a newer creative and nature-based play area that's perfect for families and a great area for everyone to explore.
