Wine lovers, this one is for you. Did you know that the United States produces more than 800 millions gallons of wine each year, ranking behind only France, Italy, and Spain in total production? While more than 80 percent of that wine is harvested in California’s Napa Valley, Cincinnati was recognized as one of America’s best cities for wine by TheStreet.
Though wine isn’t typically the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Cincinnati, the state of Ohio is not only home to more than 240 wineries, but it’s history dates back to the early 1800s when Cincinnati lawyer Nicholas Longworth planted Catawba grapes in the city above the Ohio River. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of Cincinnati’s best wineries:
What started in the 1970s with a single batch of rose has become one of the country’s premier urban wineries. Henke Winery is, of course, home to great wine, but you’ll also find exceptional cuisine, local art and entertainment, and a sense of community.
You’ll find so much more than delectable wines at Vinoklet Winery & Restaurant. Situated on 30 acres of gently rolling hills, Vinoklet is not only drop-dead gorgeous but serves both award-winning wines and mouthwatering meals from its onsite restaurant.
Housed in a historic building, The Skeleton Root features vintage decor, huge windows that let in a ton of light, plenty of cozy seating areas to relax with friends, and some of the best wine you’ve ever tasted. Wine is made on site using local and regional grapes and ingredients.
As Ohio’s oldest and largest winery, Meier’s Wine Cellars is a must-visit. Stop by their tasting room and store in Cincinnati to sample award-winning table, sparkling, fruit, specialty, and dessert wines. With such an extensive variety, you’re sure to find something you love here.
Enjoy handcrafted wines and light snacks in rustic chic digs with live music at the always cozy Revel OTR Urban Winery. This boutique winery and event space is housed in a 3,000 square foot building that can accommodate 44 barrels of handcrafted wine. The beer drinkers in your group won’t be disappointed by their small-batch brews, either.
A true artisan and boutique operation, Woodstone Creek Winery & Distillery might be small, but the wines, meads, and spirits crafted here are one-of-a-kind. Nowhere else will you be able to taste fruit and honey wines, brandy, single malt whisky, and vodka at the same tasting room.
From Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to Zinfandel, Cabernet, and Syrah, Fulton Grove Winery’s selection is quite impressive. This small, working winery crafts their vino in small batches from both local and California grapes.
