I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
Hermione Granger had it right: When in doubt, go to the library. We have a feeling Ms. Granger would adore today’s feature destination, which is arguably the most beautiful library in Ohio. In the charming little town of Van Wert, Ohio, Brumback Library is an enchanting building that looks more “castle” than “library,” and it’s every bit as magical on the inside, too!
Van Wert is an idyllic town of around 11,000 nestled in the northwest corner of Ohio. It's the largest town in the eponymous county; a "Goldilocks" locale that's not too big and not too small, with a distinct and proud identity.
Founded in 1837, Van Vert is full of stunning architecture and historic buildings that are beautiful works of art. Old churches and museums line the streets of this "big little" town, creating a charming atmosphere that's palpable.
This public library is housed inside a real-life castle, which makes a visit feel like something straight out of a fairy tale. Featuring both Gothic and Romanesque architecture, this Ohio library is wholly, wonderfully, one-of-a-kind.
The library was funded by former resident John Sanford Brumback and construction began in 1899. The castle was a gift to Van Wert residents -- and no expense was spared in its creation.
Inside, gilded decor harkens back to its historic roots, with ornate details kept in pristine condition. There is a palatial quality to this Ohio library that's truly special and awe-inspiring.
Aesthetics aside, the heart of any library is, of course, its books -- and the 287,000+ works of print and digital media in this library are truly something to behold!
Now listed as a National Historic Site, the Brumback Library was the first public library in the United States to serve an entire county. A truly unique attraction, this library castle in Ohio is always worth a visit, and easily one of the most beautiful and magical places in the state!
