I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.

Biscuits and gravy are a love language all their own, and while the South is known for serving up hearty portions of this comfort classic, the Buckeye State also has some downright delicious places to go for a bowl of meaty, carb-y, saucy goodness. In Dayton, George’s Family Restaurant is one such place; this family-owned diner has been welcoming guests like family since 1994 and is known by locals and foodies alike for dishing up some of the best biscuits and gravy in Ohio.
When you think of a classic, family-owned diner in Ohio, what comes to mind?
There's a cozy little spot in Dayton, Ohio, that checks all these boxes -- and then some -- and it's George's. This is a restaurant with quite a legacy, from its first iteration as Charburger in the 1950s to Farmer Jacks in the '70s, then Southern Bell for a few years until George Dimitrouleas and his business partner, Chef Mike Giolekas, opened up George’s Family Restaurant in 1994.
Since 1994, George's Family Restaurant has been serving up hot, hearty, home-cooked fare to the fine folks of Greater Dayton, and is a treasured local secret with a devoted following. George's is known for many things: impossibly fried chicken, mouthwatering mega burgers, and Belgian waffles topped with gravity-defying mounds of whipped cream, but their best dish, the one that's earned them a cult following, is biscuits and gravy.
Arguably the best biscuits and gravy in Ohio, George's Family Restaurant does this classic right. Buttery, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits are topped with savory seasoned gravy that's the perfect consistency -- creamy enough to coat every nook and cranny and submerge everything in peppery perfection.
You can order your biscuits and gravy straight up or get a little adventurous: the Southern Comfort special is a major fan favorite and features one sliced biscuit topped with two chicken strips, smothered in sausage gravy, and served with home fries. Definitely a stretchy pants kind of meal!
The restaurant was sold in 2022, but the new owners Steve and Sam have kept it running under the same name, with the same menu and same warm-and-welcoming vibe. This Ohio restaurant is a place where you'll be treated like family, and the biscuits and gravy really is love on a plate.
Have you visited George’s Family Restaurant before? For those in the Greater Dayton area, George’s is a well-known institution, but regardless of where you hail from, this Ohio restaurant is worth tracking down the next time a comfort craving strikes.
