I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
It’s so important for kids and families to get out and experience nature. As a parent of four kids here in Ohio, I’m so grateful to live in a state with such a robust state parks system — and our city parks are equally impressive, too! Today’s feature destination is a hidden gem that many Ohioans might not know about: Van Buren State Park. Located near Findlay, this Ohio State Park is primed for exploration and discovery — and with an ADA-accessible trail *and* pollinator garden, it’s truly a place worthy of your next day trip.
Northwest Ohio often plays second fiddle to its eastside siblings, but this region of the Buckeye State is equally resplendent and full of wonderful parks and recreation opportunities. Van Buren State Park is one of them; its small-but-mighty 296 acres contain lush forests and agricultural areas teeming with native flora and fauna.
Hiking is a popular pastime at this park, which has long been a family favorite for its accessible and kid-friendly treks. Ranging from half a mile to three miles in length, Van Buren State Park's trails offer a "choose your own adventure" for families.
In 2023, the park unveiled its newest additions: an ADA-accessible trail equipped with sensory features, a pollinator garden, and ADA-compliant picnic tables, making this park even more appealing for families.
The sensory path invites kids of all ages and abilities to come, wander, and marvel over the Buckeye State's fluttering butterflies, buzzing bees, and beautiful birds.
Of course, no family day trip to the park would be complete without a picnic, and whether you're sharing PB&J sandwiches, Goldfish, or a Happy Meal, the ADA-friendly picnic area is a great spot to fuel up!
The Ohio State Parks offers a variety of ways to connect with family and friends while discovering the Great Outdoors. Open every day and always free, Ohio's 75 state parks provide a refuge from daily life -- and places like Van Buren State Park invite *all* families to come and experience the natural beauty of our beautiful state.
Have you visited Van Buren State Park before? Did you know about the ADA-accessible trail, attractions, and amenities at this Ohio State Park? It’s pretty great to be a kid — young and old! — in the Buckeye State.
