Think you’ve seen all there is to see in Northern California? Think again! San Juan Bautista is a beautiful and unique little city that’s worth visiting. It would be easy to overlook this small city of 2,143 residents, especially since it is located not far from big attractions such as Monterey Bay. But if you love historic architecture and a walkable downtown, you’ll enjoy this city. Plus, it is home to a Spanish mission! If you’ve never been to this unique little city in Northern California, we highly recommend you take a trip here, or at least spend some time exploring this charming area on your way to Monterey Bay.
Located in the lesser-known San Benito County, San Juan Bautista is located between the Central Valley and Monterey Bay.
Built in 1873, this Gothic Revival-style home is so darling (it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places).
Third Street is where you’ll find many of the restaurants, bars, and little shops. One of our favorite places, though, is located on 4th Street--Vertigo Coffee Roasters.
In addition to coffee, they make delicious wood-fired pizzas. If you’re visiting on a sunny day, you have to sit outside on their beautiful patio.
You can choose from a variety of other restaurants, including three highly reviewed Mexican restaurants, a barbecue joint, and a beer tasting room that often hosts live music acts.
And don’t forget to pick up some pastries and bread at San Juan Bakery & Grocery before you head out of town.
