Things aren’t always what they appear to be. While exploring the majestic Klamath coastline, for instance, these old structures may simply appear to be long-abandoned farmhouses. However, these bizarre cinderblock structures are actually remnants from an old World War II radar station. Whether you come for the coastal scenery or a dose of World War history, a visit to this unique destination doesn’t disappoint.
Hiding along a narrow coastal road in Redwood National Park are a couple of cinderblock buildings that, at first, appear to be abandoned farmhouses. In fact, they were designed specifically to look like that!
However, these are not farmhouses at all. Instead, these buildings are rare survivors of a World War II early-warning radar station. Known as Radar Station B-71, the station is one of 65 that were built along the West Coast during World War II.
After the Pearl Harbor attack, America was anxious about an invasion or attack on the West Coast. These radar stations were meant to guard against potential invasions. The government even went as far as disguising the stations to appear like ordinary farm buildings from air, sea, or even the road.
This specific station just south of the Klamath River was manned by the Army Air Corps and consists of an Operations Building and a Generator Building. During the war, the station was manned around-the-clock and any suspicious boats or aircraft seen from it was promptly reported.
The diesel generator, electronic equipment, and two 50-caliber anti-aircraft guns that once were housed here are long gone, but visitors can still roam around the property today and take a peek for themselves.
There is a pull-out along the road just above the radar station where visitors can park. From here, it's just a short walk down to the buildings. Be sure to stop and check out the informative panels that explain the history behind this unique destination.
Seeing the station from afar, you'd never guess there was so much history behind these unassuming buildings! Radar Station B-71 represents a fascinating piece of wartime history and it's well worth stopping by to see for yourself when you're nearby. Learn more about it here.
