Winters can be hard to predict here in Northern California. They can be relatively mild most of the time but as recent years have proven, our region is not immune to wild snow storms and frigid temperatures. So what does this upcoming winter have in store for us? The Old Farmer’s Almanac just released their predictions and you might be pleased to know that it looks like our winter is going to be pretty mild. Of course, weather patterns can vary drastically over the different regions throughout Northern California so keep reading to learn exactly what you can expect.
Every year, The Old Farmer's Almanac releases their weather predictions for the upcoming year. They predict weather patterns based upon specific regions throughout the country. Northern California is comprised of two different regions so this winter may look different depending on which region you live in.
The upper portion of Northern California (north of Redding) can expect this year's winter to be warmer and much rainer than normal. This is definitely a welcome change compared to last year's dry winter!
It's not looking too bad for the region south of Redding down to the Bay Area, either. Farmers Almanac predicts that winter temperatures will be on average to what we've experienced in the past, although they might reach cooler than normal during some periods. Rainfall is also expected to be above average for this region throughout the winter months.
The very northern region of our state is used to getting some snowfall during winter but it's expected to be below-normal this year. The snowiest periods are expected to occur during early January and mid Febuary.
If you remember, we experienced several cold snaps last winter despite the dry conditions. This year is predicted to be much different. The coldest periods are expected to occur during late December, early and mid January, and mid- to late February. However, these cold periods aren't expected to be nearly as bad as last year.
If you're a skiier or snowboarder, don't worry. Mountain snow is expected to be near normal this year with the stormiest periods occurring in late November, late December, and early January.
When exactly you can expect the winter weather to end will vary depending on where you live. April and May are expected to be much warmer and drier in the very northern region of our state, but cooler and drier in that area between Redding and the Bay Area.
Weather patterns can definitely vary over different regions of Northern California but despite a few differences, it looks like all of Northern California will enjoy a mild winter this year. Let's hope these predictions prove themselves to be true!
