We count ourselves lucky to live in a state that is chock full of unique and beautiful wildlife. Seeing wildlife thriving in their natural habitat is preferable, but there will always be animals who require human interference in order to survive. The Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue is an awesome rehabilitation facility for a wide array of animals, and visitors are welcome to come and see it for themselves. Tour this wildlife rescue and get up close to some of NorCal’s beautiful wildlife. This is an experience that will definitely leave an impression!
Formed in 1981, the Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue was formed out of concern for local wildlife and their well-being. For decades, this wildlife rescue has been helping sick or injured animals, and you can actually visit their facility.
Located in Petaluma, the wildlife rescue is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing each and every animal that comes into their care. It's estimated that they provide medical care to over 1,500 animals per year thanks to their team of knowledgable vetinarians and volunteers.
Wildlife rescues are a lot different than zoos for the sole reason that they are committed to releasing the animals that need their help. Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue releases approximately 70% of their "patients" back into the wild, preferably at the exact location they were initially found.
In addition to their rehabilitation efforts, the center also offers educational programming to groups of all ages. Groups are welcome to stop by the facility (by reservation only) and learn about a variety of subjects including ecology and wildlife rehabilitation.
Tours of the on-site Educational Wildlife Community are also provided. The community is comprised of non-releasable wildlife who live in the center's natural enclosures. Animals you'll see include mountain lions, coyotes, raccoons, and many more!
Sonoma County Wildlife Refuge is a non-profit organization, so they rely solely on community support. This means that by paying the price of the tour, you are directly contributing to helping wildlife! Whether you're looking for a unique place to hold a birthday party or you're merely curious to see what the rescue is all about, this experience is something you can feel good about.
A visit to this unique rehabilitation center is a must for anybody who is curious about the behind-the-scene work of rescuing animals. Learn what it takes to keep Northern California wildlife wild and stop on by soon!
