1. Famous Bigfoot sighting in 1958
There have been many sightings and reports of Bigfoot over the years in Northern California. In fact, it is one of the most well-known legends in the northern part of the state. There is even a
Bigfoot festival in the town of
Willow Creek in Northern California.
One of the most notable Bigfoot sightings in California occurred in 1958. Tractor operator Jerry Crew found large footprints at the site where he was working in Bluff Creek, not far from Willow Creek. The footprints measured about 16 inches long and looked human-like.
Photographs of footprints became a media sensation and added fuel to the Bigfoot legends of Northern California. You can see the footprints at the
China Flat Museum in Willow Creek.
2. Alcatraz escape in 1962
Perhaps the most famous prison break in history, in 1962, three inmates escaped Alcatraz, the maximum-security federal prison located on a desolate island in San Francisco Bay.
The story of their escape became one of the most daring and mystifying prison escapes in history. Three inmates, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, orchestrated an elaborate plan to break free from the supposedly impenetrable fortress.
Using homemade tools and clever tactics, they managed to chip away at the walls of their cells, creating a hidden passageway that led to an unguarded utility corridor. From there, they climbed through a ventilation shaft and reached the roof, where they deployed a makeshift raft constructed from raincoats and glue. The trio vanished into the darkness of the night, leaving behind a world of speculation and intrigue. Despite extensive investigations and searches, no trace of the escapees was ever found, fueling theories of their fate and turning the Alcatraz escape into a captivating tale that still mystifies to this day.
3. Mysteries of Mt. Shasta
For some people, Mt. Shasta is California’s “Skywalker Ranch”. Native American legends and modern lore have said the mountain holds
many powers and anomalies regularly occur around the mountain. There are stories about mythical creatures inhabiting the mountain. Others say the mountain is the home of technologically advanced beings who live beneath its peaks. Some have even said that the mountain is the location of the hidden city of Telos on the supposed lost continent of Lemuria. To this day the mountain is a big draw for many
spiritual seekers .
4. The Mysterious Airship Sightings
In the late 1800s, thousands of people witnessed flying airships in the sky. Californians were the first to experience the wave of mysterious airship sightings in 1896 and 1897. Witnesses reported seeing peculiar airships flying overhead, with some accounts describing them as cigar-shaped or dirigible-like. These sightings sparked speculation and theories of extraterrestrial or advanced technological origins, contributing to the early UFO lore.
5. The Loot of Joaquin Murrieta
Joaquin Murrieta was a notorious outlaw and bandit who operated in California during the mid-19th century. Known as the Robin Hood of The West or the Robin Hood of Eldorado, the details of his life are still disputed to this day. But legend has it that he amassed a significant amount of stolen gold and treasure during his criminal activities. After his death, stories circulated that his secret loot was buried somewhere in the rugged terrain of
Northern California . Many have searched for his treasure, but its exact location remains unknown. Murrieta's enduring legacy extends beyond his notoriety, as he is believed to have inspired the creation of the iconic literary character Zorro, introduced in Johnston McCulley's 1919 novel.
