Nothing quite compares to cooling off in a natural swimming hole on a hot summer day—even better if it’s located at the bottom of a gorgeous waterfall! Not only is the hike to this three-tiered waterfall filled with glorious scenery, but the swimming hole at the end of the trail is a truly unique place for a summertime soak. The loop trail is five miles, but we think you’ll find that it’s worth every single step. There’s no better time to visit the wonderful Beale Falls, so be sure to check it out!
Hiding in Yuba County, the beautiful Beale Falls (also known as Shingle or Fairy Falls) is a fantastic sight at the end of this hiking trail. And the fact that you can swim in the pool at the bottom of it makes it even better!
At just over five miles, this loop trail leads hikers through some seriously gorgeous scenery before you even see the waterfall. While traversing this easygoing trail, you'll meander through lush pastureland dotted by groves of oak trees.
Finding the trailhead can be tricky, but it's worth it. In Grass Valley, take the Highway 20 exit toward Marysville. Turn left onto Hammonton Smartsville Road before turning left again on Chuck Yeager Road. Finally, turn left onto Spenceville Road and follow it until you reach the parking area on the left.
From here, you'll cross over a footbridge and follow the trail as it leads you through the area's rolling hills. The beginning of the trail is very simple and flat, but you'll still want to wear some sturdy shoes for when you arrive at the falls.
Once you reach Beale Falls, you'll be in total awe. Spread across three separate tiers, the 100-foot falls is truly a sight to see! Just be careful as you get closer to the falls as the terrain is rocky and slippery.
At the very bottom of the falls is a lovely pool that flows into a nearby creek. The water is pretty cold, but it's perfect for cooling off on a hot day, especially since there's almost no shade along the majority of the hiking trail.
Your summer simply won't be complete until you've swam underneath this spectacular waterfall. For an easygoing hike and a refreshing swim, consider a trip to the wonderful Beale Falls soon!
