Northern California is notably home to an abundance of hiking trails for hikers of all skill levels. Ranging from intense mountain treks to leisurely strolls, there’s a trail for whatever mood you find yourself in. Interestingly enough, some of our state’s easiest hikes boast some of the most stunning views. Castle Crags State Park is one of the most dramatic and iconic landscapes in Northern California. The park is home to a myriad of hiking trails, including the incredibly scenic and rewarding Vista Point Trail.
The wheelchair-accessible trail is only a half mile out-and-back with a very small elevation gain. It's more like a leisurely walk which just happens to take you to one of the most stunning overlooks in the park.
You'll follow a wide and well-marked trail as it leads you through a heavily wooded area. At around a quarter mile into the hike you'll arrive at the overlook area which is complete with picnic tables and benches, perfect for stopping to take in the view.
The view will absolutely blow you away. The overlook provides the perfect vantage point of Castle Crags in the distance. These unique granite formations are the result of millions of years of erosion. It's a spectacular view that you won't forget.
If you thought the view couldn't get any better, just wait. To the north you'll spot the utterly mesmerizing Mount Shasta. Considered the fifth highest peak in California, the overlook provides the perfect photo opportunity for this magnificent gem.
Take a few moments to sit on one of the benches and take in the view. It's places like this that remind us how lucky we are to live in such a photogenic state! The overlook also contains a viewing scope for getting a closer look.
To get to the trailhead from the park's entrance, turn right and drive two miles up Vista Point Road. The parking area can be found after passing through the campground in the park. The Vista Point trailhead can be found after passing the longer and more popular Crags Trail starting point.
