There is a special sight to see in Modoc National Forest. This NorCal forest has wild horses roaming free. Located in the vast expanse of this national forest is Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory, as well as a corral. Take a trip to this remote area to get a chance of a lifetime to see wild horses up close.
The Territory is a picturesque landscape with rugged terrain.
It consists of 258,000 acres, which is made up of mostly Forest Service land but also includes tribal land, California state lands, and private land.
Horses escaped from early settlers or were released when they were no longer useful as domestic animals.
Over the decades, many efforts have been made to keep the horse population in check, while also protecting these beautiful and intelligent animals.
For anyone eager to see wild horses in their element, there are several locations that provide viewing opportunities just north of the town of Alturas.
First is Big Sage Reservoir, which is accessible via Crowder Flat Road. Also on Crowder Flat Road is Logan Slough where visitors will drive on a rocky road to reach the Territory.
Some other places to view wild horses include Emigrant Spring, Quaking Aspen, Boles Tank, Reservoir M, and Draft Fence Tank.
There is also a portion of land owned by the Bureau of Land Management called Round Mountain HMA. This land is located between Goose Lake and Clear Lake in the Territory, and is a great place to catch a glimpse of wild horses.
Over the years, the Devil's Garden Plateau has faced challenges due to an overpopulation of wild horses.
Efforts have been made to reduce the population by relocating the horses. There is a corral where some of the wild horses are kept and can be adopted.
The Devil’s Garden Corral outside of Alturas is where the rounded-up population of wild horses are kept.
Visit the web page to learn about the horses and adopt one, if you have the time and resources to care for this incredible animal. People like these horses because they’re in a variety of sizes and colors.
Modoc National Forest is dedicated to striking a balance between maintaining the free-roaming wild horses and protecting the delicate ecosystem.
They also aim to respect the various uses of this public-private land. During the recent horse roundup and removal in September of 2023, the public was welcome to observe the process, although only a limited number of visitors were allowed each day.
