It turns out the capital city was first settled along the Sacramento River. However, this made the city incredibly prone to floods. In response, they began raising the streets and buildings. Thanks to recent excavations, the very first floor of Old Sacramento has been uncovered.
This is a little-known piece of our state's history that you'll definitely want to see for yourself. The Old Sacramento Underground Tour departs from the Sacramento History Museum. It's a half-mile guided walking tour that takes visitors to all of the city's most fascinating spots.
If you think you're up for it, the Underground After Hours Tour will be kicking off in May. This tour is different from the usual underground tour because visitors will learn all about the "dark parts" of Sacramento's history. Topics including murder, mischief, madness, and mayhem will all come to light.
On the After Hours tour, you'll be led to saloons, gaming halls, theaters, and houses of ill-fame. Stories of political intrigue, crime, and noteriety will be divulged. Needless to say, participants must be 21 or older in order to take the tour.
