Get an up-close glimpse at California's colorful mining history when you visit this hidden gem. The museum is full of literal treasures, as it's home to over 13,000 gems, mineral crystals, and mining artifacts. Simply put, the museum is full of living history, and every inch of it is fascinating.
The main highlight of these treasures is the Tricot Nugget, a rare specimen of crystalline gold that weighs in at a whopping 14-pounds. Mined near the American River in 1865, it's definitely an impressive piece of treasure!
On top of displaying an abundance of beautiful gems and minerals, the museum is also dedicated to illustrating what a day in the life of a miner was really like. For example, the museum is home to a working scale model of a stamp mill which demonstrates the process of extracting gold from quartz rocks.
However, the highlight of the museum is the replica of what a real underground mining tunnel looked like. Opened originally in 2001, exploring the tunnel feels like taking a trip back through time.
