Here in Northern California, we do things a certain way. Living here is such a unique experience that many people develop very specific habits that stick with us wherever we go. Even if you end up living somewhere else in your lifetime, these habits just can’t be unlearned. Here are 11 habits that make Northern Californians who they are. How many do you catch yourself doing?
1. Always, always, always taking pictures of the sunset.
Our sunsets are the absolute best. If you go through any Northern Californian's phone, it's sure to be full of beautiful sunset pictures. We just can't get enough of our beautiful skies.
2. Growing both flowers and food in our own backyards.
Here in Northern California we like to provide for ourselves and that means growing our own fruits and vegetables. We also enjoy knowing exactly where our food comes from. A backyard garden is a common thing to find behind any home in Northern California.
3. Or buying our food locally from a nearby farmer's market.
Northern Californians would much rather help out a local farmer by buying their fresh, organic produce rather than going to any supermarket. Purchasing local produce is better for our communities, and it obviously tastes a lot better than anything shipped from afar.
4. Arguing that Mt. Shasta is by far the most beautiful mountain in the world.
Mt. Shasta is an iconic image for anyone who lives in Northern California. We can't help but burst with pride whenever anybody mentions Shasta, because we know in our hearts that it's by far the most gorgeous landmark in all of California.
5. Drinking lots and lots of wine.
This one might be a stereotype but it's true! The best wine in the world is made right here in NorCal, so why wouldn't we indulge in it ourselves? French wine has nothing on Napa or Sonoma Valley.
6. Getting excited whenever the seasons change.
Northern California actually experiences some diverse types of weather. We famously go through four distinct seasons, unlike many places throughout the country. We love our seasons and we still feel that tinge of excitement whenever they start to change.
7. And acting giddy like a kid when it rains.
Although California's historic five-year drought is over, we still can't help but jump with joy whenever it rains.
8. Conserving water ALWAYS.
We may not officially be in a drought, but this winter has been one of California's driest. We're always preparing for the worst and that means we still make efforts towards conserving water. Water conservation is no joke here.
9. Pretending SoCal doesn't exist.
Southern California? Never heard of it. Sounds boring, though.
10. And arguing over where the border between Northern and Southern California truly is.
The ongoing debate over where Northern California begins and the Southern region begins is never ending. It's kind of a weird argument, but nonetheless no Northern Californian can resist putting in their two cents on the issue.
11. Always referring to Northern California as home.
Even if you end up moving away for a bit, Northern California will always remain your true home. The people are the best and the scenery can't get any better. You somehow always find yourself back here!
