It’s easy to get sucked into adventure at a young age here in Northern California. After all, our region is full of kid-friendly hiking trails that are just begging to be explored by youngsters. Make this summer one to remember by taking the entire family on an outdoor adventure. The hiking trail to Trillium Falls is perfect because it’s short and easy but it also leads you into an awe-inspiring forest environment that is bound to make you giddy with joy. This waterfall hike has a little bit of everything for everyone and it’s perfect for making some family memories.
Located within Redwood National and State Park is a short and sweet hiking trail that is perfect for families. Not only does it lead you to a picturesque waterfall, but the entire journey to the falls is like something out of a fairytale world. Get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of the forest!
The Trillium Falls trail is approximately two and a half miles and it's rated as moderate. The flat trail is easy to navigate and leads you right into the depths of this beautiful forest setting. Greenery will surround you from every side and you'll be instantly blown away by the beauty.
You'll find the trailhead near the southern end of the park's parking lot. There should be a walkway that leads you to a junction with the Davison Trail. You'll turn right and after approximately 100 yards you'll see a dirt path on your right. This is the start of the Trillium Falls trail.
You'll immediately enter the forest as you continue onto the trail. A few switchbacks will lead you uphill, all while towering redwoods and ferns provide plenty of shade and the wonderful smell of nature. It isn't long before you come across a steel bridge which provides the perfect overlook for the falls.
Trillium Falls cascades over a small gathering of moss-covered boulders. It may be small but it's absolutely gorgeous. The footbridge provides an awesome vantage points for taking pictures, so be sure to bring your camera.
The falls are a heavenly sight. You'll definitely find yourself taking a few minutes to just soak it all in. The tranquility, the smells, the sounds....everything is perfection. Even the kids will find themselves mesmerized!
The trail is a loop so you can continue on after the waterfall and be brought back to the beginning. The redwoods begin to get smaller after the waterfall and instead you'll find yourself surrounded by dense thickets of younger foliage including spruce trees.
However, if you keep chuggin' along you'll soon find yourself by some of the most impressive redwoods that the park has to offer. The trail then begins to turn north, signalling the end of this brief but beautiful journey.
