The town featured below is the definition of a hidden gem. You may have heard of this place in passing but few people realize just how lovely it is. If you have yet to visit this unique small town, you’ll want to make plans to do so ASAP. Located out in the middle of nowhere, it will take some serious effort to find this town. However, the remote location is exactly what makes this place so amazing for any adventurer.
Also referred to as "The Heart of the Klamath", the town of Happy Camp is just as funky as it sounds. Located right on the banks of the Klamath River and tucked away into the wilderness, it's not exactly the type of place you stumble upon by accident. However, you won't be able to help but seek it out once you see what's hiding here.
Founded by a group of prospectors in 1851, there's a unique story that goes along with the town's strange name. Upon arriving in the area for the first time, one miner named James Camp proclaimed "This is the happiest day of my life." So, the region was officially named Happy Camp.
The town's name isn't the only "funky" thing about it. Happy Camp has quite the history. From the threat of secession in the 1940s to become "The State of Jefferson" to Bigfoot sightings, the story of Happy Camp has a lot to it. One thing's for sure. This place is proud of its history, Bigfoot and all.
Boasting a minuscule population of just 1,190 residents, the town is comprised of just the necessities: a grocery store, some restaurants, a hotel, saloon, gas station, and such. However, it's not about what Happy Camp has, it's about where it is.
Happy Camp's stunning surroundings are enough of a reason to compel any adventurer into visiting the remote town. Of course, the mighty Klamath River is the focal point of recreation, whether you're into fishing, whitewater rafting, or simply sightseeing.
In the summer, you'll likely see people taking advantage of the river's endless tributaries. There are a plethora of emerald-green swimming holes to discover along the river's nooks and crannies. It's easy to scope out a private spot for just yourself.
Additionally, the Klamath National Forest is home to a plethora of trails which are perfect for exploring the town's surrounding wilderness. Both primitive and maintained campgrounds are plentiful, as well.
