Located outside of Auburn is the tallest bridge not only in Northern California, but the state in its entirety. As the tallest bridge in all of California, Foresthill Bridge is a sight you'll want to see with your own eyes.
Located on Foresthill Rd. between Auburn and Cool, the bridge is truly a man-made wonder. Upon its completion in 1973, it was actually considered the second highest bridge in the world. It's still among the five tallest bridges in the U.S., although it is no longer among the 65 tallest bridges in the world.
Towering over the canyon at an impressive 730-feet, the bridge is also referred to as the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge or simply the Auburn Bridge. It boasts a span of 862-feet, providing the most incredible aerial views of the canyon and river below.
Believe it or not, the bridge was constructed in order to cross a reservoir that was never actually built. Plans for the Auburn Dam ended up totally scrapped due to seismic studies, financial difficulties, and a variety of political and environmental concerns.
The bridge itself is considered very pedestrian-friendly, and as a result has become popular among both BASE and bungee jumpers. It also makes for a good place to take a stroll and simply take in the outstanding view of the rich scenery of the American River gorge.
The view from below is just as breathtaking! There is a small parking lot at the base of the bridge where you can park your car and look around. Popular activities in this area include swimming in the river, gold panning, and hiking the nearby trails.
The tallest bridge in the state of California is so worth a visit. Not only is the bridge itself a true modern marvel, but it also highlights one of the most beautiful spots in all of Placer County. Check it out yourself for a closer look.
