There are a lot of stereotypes about Northern California and the people who live here. Some of them are true, but some of them are downright lies. Let’s set the record straight once and for all. People need to stop spreading these common stereotypes about Northern California right now!
1. We hate the rain.
No, we don't melt like the Wicked Witch of the West when it rains. And yes, it does rain here. In fact, a lot of Northern Californians love when it rains. A lot of us live near beautiful forested areas that are downright gorgeous in a good downpour.
2. We speak like we're from a different planet.
Whoever made up the stereotype that our vocabularies are full of words like "hella," "Frisco," or "Cali" clearly has never stepped foot in NorCal. Northern Californians may have a slight accent, but it's nothing like the stereotypical surfer accent most people attribute to us.
3. We always put "the" in front of the highway number.
You must be thinking of SoCal. It's not "the 5." Here, we just say "Interstate 5." While you're at it, go ahead and drop the "the" from everything...like "the BART."
4. We aren't used to the cold here.
Something Northern Californians are very familiar with is convincing people that it does in fact get cold here. It's not always sunshine and clear skies here. In fact, a lot of areas of NorCal dip down into freezing temperatures throughout the year.
5. We're superficial.
This is possibly the most worn out stereotype of Californians in existence. No, we aren't all focused on superficial things like looks and money. Actually, a lot of Northern California residents are the most down-to-earth people you'll ever meet!
6. We visit Los Angeles all the time.
The first thing people ask when they find out where we're from is if we've ever been to Los Angeles or if we visit there all the time. The answer is no. If you look at a map, you'll see that Los Angeles is quite far away from the northern portion of the state. That's like asking somebody if they casually make a 12 hour drive to a different city all the time! It's just not plausible. Not to mention the fact that Northern Californians really have no desire to visit their southern neighbors.
7. We come across celebrities on a regular basis.
Um, no. You're gonna have to go to Hollywood for that.
8. Our lives revolve around the beach.
Yes, we do have beaches. And yes, we love our beaches. However, the water is usually freezing which doesn't make for the greatest swimming spots. The beaches are awesome, but there are a lot of various terrains in Northern California that are just as beautiful!
9. We are stubborn in our opinions.
Clumping a whole group of people together and labeling them as stubborn just doesn't make sense. The stereotype that Northern Californians are stuck in their own opinions and always think they are right is just plain wrong. We're decent, sensible people just like anyone else.
10. Everything revolves around San Francisco and the Bay Area.
If by chance an out-of-stater is able to name a city in Northern California, it's usually San Francisco. Okay, San Francisco is pretty awesome but by no means is it representative of all of NorCal. Northern California is actually pretty chock full of small, gorgeous towns in rural areas that couldn't be more different from San Francisco.
