Located just off Highway 12 near Glen Ellen, Sonoma Botanical Garden is a true hidden gem. Home to a biologically diverse garden, including a notable collection of Asian plants, this is an excellent place to enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of the garden!
This serene garden is tucked behind a grape vineyard and it's utterly jam-packed with beauty. Walking through the 61-acre garden, you'll be treated to views of exotic trees, ponds, waterfalls, and blossoming beauty in every season.
The garden began in 1968 when San Francisco resident Jane Davenport Jansen purchases more than 40 acres in the Mayacamas foothills. Jane would spend decades making her garden as beautiful as can be before her passing in 2000.
One of the highlights of visiting this garden is the sheer amount of Asian plants. Jane went on her first collecting expedition to Asia in 1987, and today the garden is home to one of the largest collections of scientifically documents, wild-source Asian plants in North America and Europe.
Here you can explore over 2,000 individual plant species. The garden contains mainly plants from China, Japan, and the Himalayas. See if you can identify the Asian dogwoods, lilies, magnolias, roses, oaks, and rhododendrons!
A gravel path in the garden is perfect for strolling and taking in the heavenly views. The garden is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day (closed on Tuesdays.) General admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for children, military, and students, and free for children 12 and under and members.
