Each small town or city is in a different area of Northern California, each offering its own unique charm and character. Explore the history, community, and surrounding nature each one of these special places has to offer visitors. These rural places are downright delightful!
1. Alturas
This remote Northern California town is the seat of Modoc County. The beautiful courthouse is definitely something to see if you’re visiting this town.
Alturas is located about 100 miles east of Redding and is close to the border with Oregon.
At an elevation of 4,370, Alturas has a high desert climate, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Nearby attractions include the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge and South Warner Wilderness Area. Explore the town where you'll find the Modoc County Museum, with a lot of interesting California history to explore. And stop by one of the
old-time restaurants located downtown, such as Frosty's hamburger restaurant.
2. Chester
Chester is a charming town located in Plumas County.
Chester is situated on the shores of Lake Almanor and is surrounded by the Lassen National Forest. The picturesque Lake Almanor is the main draw for visitors, offering water activities like fishing, boating, and swimming. Lassen Volcanic National Park is also nearby, providing hiking trails and geothermal wonders.

Colusa is a beautiful little town in the northern Central Valley. It is situated along the Sacramento River and is about 65 miles northwest of Sacramento.
Just walk around the downtown area and explore the beautiful neighborhood with Victorian-era buildings.
This very green downtown is a
perfect small town for all sorts of recreational activities. Launch a kayak onto the river right from the downtown area. You can also go fishing along the riverbank. The Colusa Rodeo is a big annual event here that takes place at the Colusa County Fairgrounds.
6. Occidental
This beautiful
Sonoma county town is located about 70 miles north of San Francisco in the countryside.
This relaxed, artsy town has many boutiques and eateries to explore.
Occidental has a fantastic summertime farmer’s market every Thursday evening. The market has vendors selling fruits, vegetables, prepared foods, crafts, and much more! Visitors can easily explore wine country from here or drive 15 minutes north to
Monte Rio and spend time on the Russian River.
7. Fortuna
Fortuna is a friendly town located next to the Eel River right off Highway 101.
It is situated approximately 20 miles south of Eureka in Humboldt County. Fortuna’s proximity to beautiful parks, riverfront areas, the beach, and forests make it a great home base from which to explore the surrounding natural settings.
