One of the most visited areas in the Humboldt National Forest is Founders’ Grove. This incredible area will really take your breath away. Conveniently located off of Highway 101, it’s easily accessible which makes it a popular entryway into the Avenue of Giants. If you’re looking for a quick way to experience all the glory that these magnificent redwoods trees offer, take a quick trip to Founders’ Grove. The short and simple hike through this towering forest just can’t be beat.
Founders Grove is one of the most notable areas in the Humboldt Forest for its massive size. With redwoods surrounding you as far as the eye can see, the forest seems to swallow you up the moment you step foot into it.
The grove contains three separate hiking trails, but the most popular is the half mile loop trail which takes you to the famous Founders' Tree and the toppled Dyerville Giant. The trail is pretty simple (it's more of a walk) and handicap accessible.
The Founders' Tree is one of the most spectacular sights in the entire grove. The tree towers over you at 346 feet tall. A platform even allows visitors to walk right up to this massive thing in order to truly get a feel for how large this tree is.
Another popular spot is the Dyerville Giant which fell in 1991. There's something strange about seeing one of these gigantic trees toppled over like this. At over 350 feet long, the size of the Dyerville is just as incomprehensible laying down.
The grove is noted for the pure height of all of its trees. This is due to the grove's ideal location. Surrounded by 3,000-foot tall mountains, the grove is shielded from weathering by storms and still experiences moisture from the nearby Eel River Valley. This creates the perfect conditions for these beautiful redwoods.
You could spend all day exploring every crack and crevice of the forest. Winter is said to be the best time to visit this grove because that is when the trees look their best. Crowds are also smaller during this time of year.
Founders Grove is one of the most iconic redwood forests. The sights really don't get much better than this. The simple hike through the grove is utterly awe-inspiring. If you only see one redwood grove in your life, you'll want to make it this one!
