Consisting of 1,568 acres of bluffs, hills, and scenic views, the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline is a real gem of the East Bay. There are several hiking routes situated along the shoreline, but this 2.5-mile-loop is a great place to start.
Parking for this hike can be found at Eckley Pier in Crockett, California. From the pier, you'll immediately jump on the Bull Valley Trail which leads you uphill to views of the strait.
Featuring coastal hills that rise up to 750-feet above Carquinez Strait, the views from the trail are simply outstanding. From the highest points in the park, you can view not only the strait below but Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Diablo along the horizon.
The Bull Valley Trail is easy to follow as it leads you across rolling grasslands, wooded ravines, and river shoreline. Cows can commonly be sighted grazing in the area, so watch out for cow pies!
Keep left upon coming to a fork in the trail and you'll be led onto the Carquinez Overlook Trail. Taking you around a ridge and through the eucalyptus forest, it seems like there's no end to the gorgeous scenery on this trail.
After the forest, views of the Benicia-Martinez Bridge will appear before your eyes - the perfect combination of both manmade and natural beauty. From here, you can also see the marshland of Benicia State Recreation Area.
Follow the loop and it will eventually take you back to the pier. Showcasing a bridge, lush hillsides, and views of San Pablo Bay, this hike truly has a little bit of everything! Plan to check it out the next time you're in the East Bay.
