Consisting of 160-acres, the Ma-le'l Dunes is a beautiful coastal landscape of forests, marshes, beaches, and sand dunes. Not only is it a visual treat, but it's loaded with recreational opportunities as well.
The northern portion of the Ma-le'l Dunes is part of Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Trail access here is limited to pedestrians only. Additionally, the road to the parking lot is closed Tuesday through Thursday in order to preserve the feel of true wilderness.
The BLM owns and manages the southern portion of Ma-le'l Dunes. The area's trails are open to hikers, dog walking, and equestrian use. The dune ecosystem is considered very fragile, so be sure to remain only on designated trails.
Strolling along the trail, you'll find yourself immersed in a surreal landscape of coastal forest, sand dunes, marsh, and beaches. It feels like there's something to marvel at around every corner.
