San Francisco winters are pleasant compared to most of the country. Take advantage of our pleasant climate and do a winter walk through grasslands, a eucalyptus forest, unique vegetation, and a creek! Not far from San Francisco, there is a serene place to get away and enjoy the best of the beauty in California.
The views from this mountain are memorable. You'll be able to see the legendary fog creeping into San Francisco.
San Bruno Mountain's Saddle and Bog Trails is a doable and easy walk around the saddle and bog. This is the main trail to stay on at San Bruno Mountain.
Manzanita is found on this trail. This is an evergreen shrub or small tree found in parts of the USA and Canada. This area is characterized by various distinct shrubbery and vegetation.
The manzanita is characterized by smooth orange or red bark and stiff, curvy branches. You'll surely be amazed by the beauty of the Bay Area and California in general.
The hiking options are varied and good for all skill levels. There is a popular trail named Summit Loop that takes about 2 hours to do, with wonderful views of the city.
There is a nature walk organized by the Yerba Buena Chapter of the California Native Plant Society.
The nature walk offers a chance to see the San Bruno Mountain manzanita, Pacific manzanita, Leobrewer manzanita and much more plant species. More about this organized trail from Yerba Buena Chapter of the California Native Plant Society homepage or call Doug at 415-269-9967 or email dougsr228@comcast.net for more information.
San Bruno Mountain has many areas on the top and along the four mile long ridge to appreciate stunning views. Once you have gone to the top, you're so close yet so far away from the hum and heart of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Fun fact: the trails here all lead to several radio broadcast towers like KTSF television, ION's KKPX television and NBC's KNTV television. The towers prevent poor service in the otherwise hilly Bay Area region.
The views alone will be worthwhile for hikers and bikers alike. If you look hard enough try and spot views of Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Diablo, the Oakland foothills, and the Farallon Islands.
Visit San Bruno Park at this address: 555 Guadalupe Canyon, Brisbane, 94005. Or check out the San Bruno Mountain State & County Park Site for trail information and current conditions.
