San Francisco is jam packed with nature in a relatively small area. What is best is that a lot of the pristine nature is waiting to be explored or just admired in the city. From the majestic beauty of the Presidio to the iconic hills of the city, it’s clear just how stunning and distinct San Francisco can be. Now, what about Seal Rocks?
Seal Rocks is a group of small rock formation islands in the Lands End area of the Outer Richmond District of San Francisco. Let’s learn more about this fascinating rock formation that you can appreciate from an iconic city restaurant or on the beach!
Seal Rocks is located in the Pacific Ocean, at the north end of the Ocean Beach, near the Cliff House and Sutro Baths.
Seal Rocks is jutting from the coast of steep rocky cliffs in Ocean Beach. The area is notable for narrow sandy beaches from the north, and long stretches of beach at Ocean Beach and Fort Funston to the south.
The name of this rock formation, Seals rock, comes from the former Steller's sea lions and California sea lions, who would migrate and hang out on the rock. According to some, the seals started reappearing in January of 1990 after the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.
Dreamy and powerful. The coastal features found here today were formed by the long history of waves, wind, and sand movement. This part of the coast is similar to Oregon with the jutting rocks in the ocean.
If you'd rather get a view from the Cliff House, then grab a drink or meal and gaze at the beauty. Seal Rocks is often overlooked yet visible from not only the Cliff House, as well as Sutro Baths.
