St. Francis of the Mountains, often simply referred to as the St. Francis Chapel, is an old church tucked away in a stand of Aspens. Exuding historic charm amid a serene setting, you don't have to be a churchgoing individual to appreciate this hidden beauty.
All visitors are welcome to check out this incredible chapel and it's fairly easy to find. It's located near the southern shore of the lake. Take Highway 89 to Fallen Leaf Lake Road and follow it past Camp Richardson. The chapel is located right along the road before you reach the fire station.
Once you find it, you'll immediately feel like you've been transported to some magical woodland setting. A stone pathway leads straight to the chapel, surrounded by towering trees and lots of lush foliage. It's a beautiful setting!
Built in 1923, the chapel is definitely unlike any other you've seen. It boasts a stone foundation with a pine exterior, which pairs perfectly with the serene natural setting.
Inside the church, you can view a cross from St. Grace in San Francisco. The cross was used at the church after the devastating 1906 earthquake. Outside, you can explore the memorial garden and gorgeous surroundings.
The church is only open during summer months, so make it your mission to stop by the next time you find yourself at Fallen Leaf Lake. On top of its extraordinary history, it's also just a beautiful place to lose yourself for an hour or two!
