Follow The River On This Simple 3-Mile Hike Through The Woods In Northern California

There aren’t many things more calming than the sounds of nature when you’re craving an escape. The chirping of birds, the dull roar of a rushing river, and the tranquil lull of a trickling waterfall—you’ll find it all on this simple 3-mile hike along the North Fork American River. This easygoing river trail is the perfect adventure for when you’d like to surround yourself with stunning NorCal natural beauty, so set off on this heavenly hike soon.
Boasting picturesque views of the North Fork American River before leading you straight to a 40-foot waterfall, the Codfish Falls Trail is most definitely a serene outing. It's short, easy, and it belongs on your to-do list.
The trailhead can be found along Ponderosa Way within Auburn State Recreation Area. From Auburn, you can take I-80 east to Weimar Cross Road before turning right on Canyon Way. The road turns into Ponderosa Way after about half of a mile, and the parking area is just before Ponderosa Bridge.

The trail is quite easy and boasts fantastic views right from the beginning. In fact, you'll start your journey with the beautiful view of Ponderosa Way Bridge stretching across the roaring American River.
The trail is well marked and will guide you through spectacular scenery, including small wooded areas and thickets of bushes and trees. During spring and summer, the foliage is lush and vibrant.
You'll follow the markers as it guides you right along the North Fork American River. The trail closely follows the river for the majority of the hike, only branching away near the end as it winds it way up a hillside. This is the steepest part of the hike.
Finally, the trail will lead you into an area that's dense with trees and you'll start to hear the sound of flowing water. Codfish Falls is definitely a beauty! At 40-feet-tall, the waterfall boasts a healthy flow that is best seen during spring or early summer.
After seeing the falls, you can then retrace your steps back to the trailhead. For a peaceful hike that ends with a bang, definitely consider the Codfish Falls Trail for your next adventure!
