Autumn is here at last and that means it’s time to indulge in everything pumpkin! There’s one Northern California town that takes pumpkins seriously. In fact, they even call themselves “The Pumpkin Capital of the World”. Every year they hold a gigantic pumpkin festival and it’s become an iconic event that every Northern Californian should partake in at some point. It’s almost like the town itself turns into a pumpkin wonderland. Complete with pumpkin-themed food, outfits, contests, and entertainment, this is a one-of-a-kind event that you won’t want to miss.
As summer comes to an end and fall begins, there's one Northern California town that transforms into a delightful pumpkin wonderland without fail. Half Moon Bay is home to the most fantastic pumpkin festival in the country and it's simply a must-see event for pumpkin lovers.
The Half Moon Bay Art And Pumpkin Festival is now in its 45th year. This year's festival will take place October 13-14 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. These two days are jam-packed with pumpkin themed fun that you'll definitely want to partake in.
The festivities technically kick off on October 8th when the "Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off" takes place. This event is considered the most epic pumpkin weigh-off in the world and awards the farmer who produces the biggest pumpkin a stunning cash prize of $30,000.
Last year, farmer Joel Holland took home the top prize with a gargantuan 2,363-pound champion "mega-gourd". He also set a new American record that completely obliterated the rest of the competition. Holland is expected to return to this year's festival along with numerous other accomplished pumpkin growers.
The gigantic, prize-winning pumpkin is the centerpiece of the festival but there's so much more to this incredible event. Live entertainment will be provided throughout the festival including live music from some of the Bay Area's biggest bands. The sounds of local musicians, comedy acts, bluegrass performances, and marching bands will fill the streets.
Of course, fabulous food and drinks will be available to purchase including many pumpkin-themed eats. Pumpkin pie, pancakes, ice cream, cheesecakes, and even pumpkin macaroni and cheese are sure to give you your fix of this seasonal delight. Be sure to wash it all down with a pumpkin-flavored craft brew or cocktail!
A variety of contests and events will also take place over the two days. Try your hand at the pie-eating contest and be sure to dress up in your favorite pumpkin-themed outfit for the costume contest, as well.
