When you’re in desperate need of some quiet time and a place where you can switch off your thoughts (or get lost in them), nature is always the way to go. However, it’s not always feasible to drive way out into the backcountry in order to get away for a bit. Sometimes you have to find tranquility in more convenient locations, such as Japanese tea gardens. Northern California is full of them, but the garden featured here is especially notable for several reasons. Considered the oldest Japanese garden in the state, a visit to this peaceful oasis is nothing short of spectacular.
Take a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of daily life by planning a trip to the oldest Japanese garden not only in Northern California, but the entire Western Hemisphere. Hakone Gardens is a must-visit destination that will blow you away!
Located in Saratoga, the Hakone Estate and Gardens are a beloved American treasure. Not only is this place absolutely stop-you-in-your-tracks beautiful, but it also contains some fascinating history.
The garden was initially built in 1917 for Oliver and Isabel Stine, two San Francisco locals and art enthusiasts. It was intended as a summer retreat and was directly inspired by Isabel's trips to Japan.
The garden and estate changed ownership numerous times over the decades, but it was officially bought by the City of Saratoga in 1966. Today the garden is managed by The Hakone Foundation and they have been opened to the public.
The Japanese garden is one of the best in the country, and you can't help but feel totally at peace as you explore it. Complete with a koi pond garden, moon bridge, tea houses, and other amazing features, Hakone is considered an authentic reproduction of a 19th-century Kyoto tea merchant's house and shop.
Venture through the garden at your own pace or try the docent-led tour and traditional tea ceremony for an extra special experience. However you decide to explore the garden's 18 acres, you'll find yourself completely at peace during your time here.
A visit to the Hakone Estate and Gardens is always a sublime experience. Not only is it one of the oldest Japanese gardens in the Western Hemisphere, it's also one of the most tranquil destinations in Northern California!
Hakone Estate and Gardens is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends. Check their
website for winter hours! Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and free for children under 4.
