Napa Valley is considered an incredibly serene destination today, but it wasn't always that way. Long ago, this region of the valley was a massive volcano, and it erupted 4.3 million years ago. The explosion had a huge effect on creating the scenery that you see today.
The volcanic explosion was so big that it completely flattened and buried a section of redwood trees in volcanic ash, creating the nearby Petrified Forest. Additionally, volcanic remains compose some of the valley's most stunning geothermal features, including hot springs and the geyser known as California's Old Faithful.
