When you think of wine tasting in Northern California, images of bucolic vineyards in Napa Valley come to mind. However, any connoisseur will be quick to tell you that there’s a whole lot more to NorCal’s wine scene than that! You’ll find wineries all over and in all types of landscapes, including perched right over the Pacific Ocean. Located in Fort Bragg, Pacific Star Winery is the only winery situated right on the edge of the wild Mendocino Coast. Sip, relax, and enjoy one of the most breathtaking views in the country when you visit this oceanfront winery.
Located on the bluffs of the Mendocino Coast, you really couldn't ask for a more picturesque location to enjoy a glass of wine. Many come to Pacific Star Winery for the view, but they stay for the amazing selection of handcrafted wines!
Pacific Star Winery can be found roughly 12 miles north of Fort Bragg, right off Highway 1. Whether you're simply passing through the area or you're looking to branch out from NorCal's typical wine country, a stop at this oceanfront winery is definitely a great idea.
From the parking lot, you can walk down a path directly to where the magic happens. One of the first things you'll see is barrels upon barrels of wine. The grapes are transported directly to Pacific Star, and this is where the winemaking process begins.
There is an indoor wine bar (currently closed because of the pandemic), but the outdoor seating is plentiful and, let's be honest, boasts way better views. With plenty of outdoor recliners and picnic tables spread evenly along the bluffs, all visitors can enjoy a front-row seat of the amazing ocean vista.
The winery is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. (the grounds close at 5:30 p.m.) A wine tasting costs $10 for six of their handcrafted wines, and no reservations are needed. The winery also hosts Saturday evening bonfires on select dates throughout the year which also costs just $10.
Nothing beats spending an afternoon sipping on California wine while gazing out at the ocean! Be sure to keep an eye out for migrating gray whales, when the season is right. These giant creatures are known to make an appearance with a brief glimpse of back, tail, or spray.
It's not very often you get the chance to taste wine atop the rugged Mendocino Coast. Enjoy one of the most inspiring wine destinations in Northern California and learn more about Pacific Star Winery by visiting their website.
