Northern California is home to some amazing campsites that include everything from beachfront getaways to rustic forest retreats. However, there’s only one spot where you can spend the night on the rim of NorCal’s largest volcano and it should definitely be on your bucket list. The Little Mt. Hoffman Lookout is far from your typical campsite, as it boasts a gorgeous view of Mt. Shasta in the distance and, of course, it’s located on top of a volcano! The next time you’re in the mood for a hardcore adventure, definitely be sure to check this place out.
It's not every day you get the opportunity to sleep on the rim of a volcano, but that's exactly what you'll do when you rent the Little Mt. Hoffman Lookout in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Sitting at an elevation of 7,000-feet, visiting this lookout makes for a memorable adventure.
Constructed in the 1920s, this historic fire lookout is one of the last remaining in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It was used on a regular basis up until 1978, and is still used occasionally during times of extreme fire danger.
Staying in one of these historic fire lookouts is always a unique experience, but this one especially so. After all, it's perched on Little Mt. Hoffman, a cinder cone that's considered the largest identified volcano within California.
The lookout itself is comprised of a 14-foot by 14-foot cabin surrounded by a wooden deck. It's equipped with some necessities, including a wood stove, two cots, storage cabinets, a dining table, cleaning supplies, and a fire extinguisher. A vault toilet is located in a separate building. There's no electricity or water, so be sure to come prepared.
This is definitely a rustic camping experience, but visitors find that it's SO worth it. The view from here simply can't be beat! Campers will enjoy a spectacular view of Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen, and even Mt. McLoughlin in Oregon. Simply put, you'll feel as if you're on top of the world at this remote fire lookout.
Best of all, this area is perfect for all types of outdoor recreation. Don't forget your camera because the sightseeing and bird watching is excellent up here. Additionally, there are many hiking trails, beaches, and even caves waiting to be explored nearby.
The Little Mt. Hoffman Lookout is only open to campers from June through the middle of October. Reservations for this spectacular campsite can be made up to 180 days in advance, but they go quickly so plan on reserving your space as far out as possible.
