Sure, hiking is great exercise and all, but is that really the reason why we do it? A hike without scenery is a sad hike indeed, but that’s no issue for the exciting trek featured here. Winding entirely around the east peak of NorCal’s Mount Tamalpais, the Verna Dunshee Trail is popular for its endless scenic views and accessibility. For an adventure that’s sure to make an impression, you’ll definitely want to check it out.
Whereas many trails make you work for a gorgeous view, the Verna Dunshee Trail practically gives them away for free. The easy trail boasts epic views from start to finish, and best of all, it's paved and handicap accessible.
At less than a mile round trip, it shouldn't take you very long to complete this trail. However, the incredible scenery will have you wishing it would never end. The trail is just 0.7-miles with an elevation gain of just 285 feet.
The trail winds around the entirety of the east peak of Mount Tamalpais, boasting sweeping 360-degree views along the way. You'll be able to see all sorts of Bay Area icons during your time on the trail, including downtown San Francisco, Point Reyes, and the Farallon Islands.
The beginning of the paved path is clearly marked on the east end of the parking lot. It then leads hikers southeast across the lush mountainside, where you can enjoy glimpses of the Pacific Ocean through the fog. The trail continues onto the north side of the mountain.
After a junction with the Temelpa Trail that leads to the summit, the Verna Dunshee Trail shows off a spectacular view of the Mount Tamalpais watershed. This includes bodies of water like Alpine Lake, Bon Tempe Lake, Phoenix Lake, and Lake Lagunitas.
The trail also connects to a trail called Plank Walk, which takes you up to Gardner Lookout. The short, 0.3-mile trail makes for a worthwhile side trip, as you can get an up close view of a historic fire lookout tower.
Scenic views, mild inclines, and accessibility? It seems like the Verna Dunshee Trail has it all! Be sure to check out this fantastic hike on Mount Tamalpais and experience it for yourself.
