Hiding in Calaveras County is a natural wonder unlike any other in Northern California. Just a short hike away, these limestone caverns are bound to leave you in awe of their otherworldly beauty.
The caverns can be found by following a short hiking trail from the Natural Bridges Day Use Area. A sign marks the beginning of the trail just off Parrotts Ferry Road. The hike is a short, 2-mile trek down to the creek. (Natural Bridges has an $8 parking fee which can be paid in cash at the entrance.)
The Natural Bridge Trail is quite popular, which means it's pretty easy to follow. Following the trail, you'll descend down Coyote Creek and through rich woodlands. After following the creek, the trail breaks out of the forest and opens up into a stunning canyon.
After passing through a small picnic area, you'll be treated to the sight of the creek flowing out of the wide mouth of a cave. The large cave is covered in mossy foliage, which can be dripping with water during the wet season.
You can actually hike into the cave - just be prepared to get wet! Covered floor to ceiling in colorful limestone formations, the sight of this spacious cavern is something to behold.
Exploring deeper into the cavern requires swimming or paddling in a boat. In fact, floating through the cavern on an inner tube or boat is a popular summertime activity. The water level can vary depending on the season. Use caution when the water is high or if the current is too swift.
